Nowadays everyone wants to become a web developer, mainly because you don’t need a college degree and the salaries can reach up to $100 000 / Year in countries like USA and Canada.
But not all this jobs are a dream, most of them are a real nightmare, so I will give you a few examples:
The difficult/fake jobs
You pass all of this, you get all excited to start your new job, and when you are actually there, they give you some simple tasks like updating some html and css content. At the start they might tell you that you are only working on some simple tasks for you to adapt well to the company, and gradually they will increase the level of difficulties of the tasks you are working on.
But soon you will realise that it was all a lie, all those cool projects you saw on Udemy, on YouTube and many other places, are not really the kind of projects that average companies do on a regular basis. This happened to myself and a couple of friends too, after all the hard work to get the job, you are trapped in a position where if you spend at least one year, it’s almost like time wasted, because you are not going to learn anything new, and your skills as a web developer might even drop because you are practising the important stuff…
The Crazy software houses
Not all of them, but most of this kind of companies, are well know for their bully culture, where basically they will put their employees under great pressure, for no obvious reason, other than to say “We are fast! We are AGILE”. This is their favourite word AGILE!
Typically they will assign a task to a junior developer, someone who is just starting out, without much previous experience, and then they will ask him/her how long this task will take. Well to give a proper estimation of how much time something will take, we need to have some experience on that, meaning we have done that task a couple of times in the past. Now I ask you, how can a junior developer, who is someone who doesn’t have too much experience, give an estimate time to a task that he never done before, maybe it would take 10 mins, maybe 2 hours.
This is really just to show you the bully culture of this kind of companies, every hour they will come up to you and ask you how is the task going on, without even offering you any kind of help, and therefore making you more anxious/nervous, making it hard to even focus.
So this are some of the worst companies you can work for, but don’t worry not all companies are like this, some companies are really cool and have amazing people working there. Your first job can be really anywhere, but once you move to your second job as a web developer, make sure to check websites like Glassdoor to read some reviews and get enough information about the company you are about to join!
